Grayson Hunt: one of the most badass characters to come out of recent games. Bulletstorm does exactly what it says on the tin, you create a storm of bullets. There is nothing new I can say about this game that the media hasn’t already picked up on but what a ride it has been. As of recently i have completed the game and it has left me most satisfied. I enjoyed most of the humour and certainly enjoyed the killshot system. At first I was under the impression it was just a meaningless score system however it is intricately designed as a easy method to refuel your favourite weaponry, upgrade them (slightly) and cause even more chaos.
Weaponry is a huge part of the game, having fun with turning monsters and aliens into chunks in various ways with the over the top gore. My favourite is probably the sniper rifle, as it requires skill but not as much as many games with long distance weapons. Once fired it goes into a 3rd person bullet view in which you can redirect the bullet straight into a precise spot on the enemy, which of course is brilliant for headshots and so fourth, by headshots I actually mean decapitations. My second favourite weapon was the Drill-shot. Firing small drill-like projectiles into enemies and watch them fly. Killing most things in a single shot may sound overpowered but it is well balanced with a long reload time and a single shell per magazine.
The games narrative struck me a little by surprise, with all the OTT dialogue and killing i wasn’t expecting much from it, however it delivered more than I bargained for. The characters have personality and depth which was surprising to begin with, and the lead female actually kicks ass. Needless to say the narrative is far from complex but it did better than ‘you’ve crashed find a way off the planet by kicking ass’.
As for the dialogue which has been hyped, I was suitably impressed with the many swear combinations and insults that were consistently thrown around. The times where it wasn’t making fun of other games it was making low-brow jokes.
All in all the game presented nicely (despite complaints about lack of customisation) and already has me wanting more. I really hope they do release some DLC or at the least announce a sequel in the near future. This has the potential to become a fantastic franchise.
Speaking of fantastic franchises, three upcoming games I’m looking forward to playing soon: Crysis 2, Portal 2 and Pokemon Black/White, so expect to hear about them on here soon. For now, I’m going back in for more outrageous killing.
