So i now have a preliminary title for my project:
Defining and Designing an effective game for school education that both entertains and informs.
I will be looking into the designs and features that make ordinary games educational and also looking at serious games and simulators designed in part to be directly educational. So thats everything from World of Warcraft to SimCity to Brain Training.
The project will aim to research the topic to better understand education and games and also create a design document detailing a games designed for entertainment that educates the players.
Ive been informed by my supervisor that the ceo of playgen will be coming into one of his lectures soon and that i should attend and ask questions relating to the subject. So i best be informed for it! Also must sign up for the playgen website, probably a good idea.
I am currently reading a book by James Paul Gee detailing what games can contribute to learning. Its a fantastic book. I have another 4 books lined up for after that and also many many journal articles and webpages to read on the subject. Really no shortage of research on the topic: its a great choice for the project.
So my posts may be few and far between for the next few weeks, depending on how much time i can put into actually playing games and not just reading about them… want to buy Fable 2 after hearing Peter Molyneux speak at Eurogamer, which i enjoyed alot.
